Doctors

AMA Doctor Finder (American Medical Association)
Enables you to search the United States for a doctor by name or by specialty. Provides information about virtually every licensed physician in the United States and its possessions, including more than 814,000 doctors of medicine (MD) and doctors of osteopathy or osteopathic medicine (DO).

American Board of Medical Specialties: Board Certification Verification
Check to see if your physician is board certified. The American Board of Specialties (ABMS), a not-for-profit organization comprising 24 medical specialty boards, is the pre-eminent entity overseeing physician certification in the United States. Board certification information is searchable by name of physician for all physicians certified by one of the member boards of ABMS. Registration is required, but free.

Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners (LSBME)
The LSBME website includes information on the procedures for licensing, verification, and investigation of physicians certified in Louisiana.

Medicare Participating Physician Directory(Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services)
This search tool contains names, addresses, phone numbers, specialties, and other important information of physicians who participate in Medicare. Physicians designated as "participating" in this directroy have agreed to accept assignment on all Medicare claims and covered services. Physicians designated as "non-participating" may choose to accept assignment on a case-by-case basis.

Hospitals

Louisiana Hospital Association
Established in 1926, the LHA is a not-for-profit assocation representing all types of hospitals and healthcare systems throughout the state. This web site provides a searchable directory of licensed hospitals in the state.

Facilities Directory of the Veterans Health Administration
The Veteran Health Administration operates medical centers, outpatient clinics, a community-based outpatient clinic, and veteran centers in Louisiana. This site is a storehouse of facility and key staff information within the VA facilities, maintained on a regular basis by editors and administrators nationwide throughout the VA network. Designed for ease-of-use, this site categorizes information for browsing by state and administration, as well as by viewing through an interactive map of the United States.

Shriners Hospitals Directory
Shriners Hospitals for Children is a network of pediatric specialty hospitals, founded by the Shrine, where children receive excellent medical care absolutely free of charge. Links to the more than twenty Shriners Hospitals, including the Shriner's hospital in Shreveport, are available through a drop-down menu.

Hospital Compare (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services)
This U.S. Government web site has information on how well different hospitals care for patients with six of the most common medical problems, or who undergo a variety of surgical procedures. The information comes directly from hospitals that have agreed to submit quality information to be made public.

Quality Check (The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations)
Quality Check is a search engine used to locate JCAHO accredited health care organizations.

Cancer Care

Find an Oncologist (American Society of Clinical Oncology)
This is a public, searchable listing of ASCO members. You may search by first or last name, organization, city, state, country or specialty.

How to Find a Doctor or Treatment Facility if you have Cancer (National Cancer Institute) The National Cancer Institute has created this FactSheet with resources to enable consumers to locate physicians and treatment facilities that specialize in cancer care.

Medicare

Medicare (MedlinePlus)
Provides links to sites reviewed by librarians at the National Library of Medicine that cover overviews of Medicare, specific services, current news and related matters.

Medicare - The Official U.S. Government Site for people with Medicare (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services)
Information on eligibility, billing, filing an appeal, and prescription drug plans. This site offers comprehensive information on every aspect of Medicare.

Medicare Basics for Caregivers (NIH Senior Health, a service of the National Institute on Aging)
This site provides an overview of what medicare is, its role in planning medical care for older patients, prescription drug coverage, continuing care optioins, and a Frequently Asked Questions page. It is part of the National Institute on Aging's NIH Senior Health website, which provides useful information for seniors on a wide range of health-related topics, and is specially designed for ease of use by people with limited eyesight. Text can be enlarged by clicking a button, or played as a sound file.

Medicaid

Medicaid (MedlinePlus)
Medicaid is government health insurance that helps many low-income people in the United States to pay their medical bills. The regulations vary from state to state. This site, maintained by the National Library of Medicine, provides links to many additional sources of information.

Louisiana Medicaid CommunityCARE Program
In Louisiana, most low-income families with children, disabled adults and children who are Medicaid recipients are required to participate in CommunityCARE. It is a comprehensive health delivery system, which links Medicaid recipients to a Primary Care Physician (PCP). The PCP manages the care of each CommunityCARE enrollee by providing health education, preventive care, and acute care and refers the enrollee to specialists when needed.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services works with state agencies to administer Medicaid. Their web site provides information on Medicaid and links to the relevant state agency sites.

Health Insurance

This site provides links to resources that explain how health insurance works and what the different types are.

Cobra Continuation of Coverage (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services)
The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985 (COBRA) is a federal law under which some employees who leave a job with group health benefits may retain their health insurance by paying the premiums themselves, for a period of up to 18 months. This U.S. Government web site provides information on who is eligible, the enrollment period, and much more.

LaCHIP (Louisiana Department of Health & Human Services)
LaCHIP stands for "Louisiana Children's Health Insurance Program." LaCHIP is a program to provide health insurance for children in Louisiana at reduced cost. If your child is younger than 19 and does not have health insurance, he or she could get LaCHIP to pay for seeing a doctor. LaCHIP covers care at a hospital, prescription drugs and immunizations. This web site describes the program, what it does, and who is eligible.

Drug Prescription Assistance

Understanding Prescription Assistance Programs (National Council on Patient Information & Education)
This site offers a general description of the Prescription Assistance Programs that are offered by many pharmaceutical companies, and links to help you find out whether your prescription medicines are available through one of these programs.

Partnership for Prescription Assistance
Many pharmaceutical companies have programs in which prescription medicines are available for patients who cannot otherwise pay for them either without charge or at reduced cost. The Partnership for Prescription Assistance provides help finding out whether your medicines are available through the program, and whether you qualify for assistance. PPA is sponsored by American pharmaceutical companies.

National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization Database
Select a state you are interested in or type a provider name and then click search. The search will display a list of cities and counties in the specified state that are served by NHPCO member hospices. Selecting a city or county will result in a list of local Hospices in the surrounding area that serve that city or county complete with contact information.
